Historical Legacy:
Bangabasi College is a heritage academic institution that was founded in 1887 during the colonial period by Acharya Girish Chandra Bose under the guiding inspiration of academic genius, erudite scholar and social reformer of Bengal, pundit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. The institution played a commendable role during the Freedom Movement. It is a matter of great pride that freedom fighter Jatin Das, was a BA student of this college. The Library of the college is named Jatin Das Memorial Hall after him. The objective of the college was to impart higher education to the socio-economically weaker sections of the society.
A degree course in Bioscience started from 1947-1948 onwards.The college, fared exceedingly well at the graduation level, producing many scholars of national and international repute. The GC Bose Biological Research Unit, a unique research laboratory, was set up in the college where several teachers of Bangabasi College completed their PhD works. The college became co-educational by 1979 and opened its first MSc Course in Zoology in the year 2005.

The institution has not only a glorious past but also an illuminating present. Continuous efforts towards learning and critical thinking are being encouraged through seminars and workshops throughout the year. The institution has firmly emphasized the need to develop itself responsibly and in a sustainable development way. Its distinctiveness lies in its emphasis on the Sustainable Development Goals as advanced by the United Nations in the 2030 Agenda. It firmly realizes the importance of the impact of all three dimensions of environmental, economic, and social on human lives.
Environmental Outputs
One of the most innovative works the college has undertaken is its initiative to install Solar Panels on the rooftop of the 4-storeyed college main building whose capacity of power generation is 10KVA. One Inverter is connected to the grid meter of the electric supply line of CESC. This not only saves electric consumption but also encourages to use renewable energy for future benefit. The data obtained from the solar meter gives the following information and data daily CO2 emission rate, daily plantation saved, and daily coal content i.e. carbon degradation. Moreover, the college has done energy audits, green audits, and environmental audits.
Economic Outputs: Women's Empowerment and Capacity Building
The college believes in a holistic conception of education which is inextricably related to not only academic scholarship but also enabling oneself as economically self-sufficient. With this objective in mind, the college has initiated Skill Development Courses in different fields such as -
The college is vigilant about women’s rights and entitlements.The college organizes seminars throughout the year. Special emphasis is given to the Gender Sensitization Programmes. Eminent personalities are invited to deliver their lectures. The West Bengal Commission for Women has been invited to deliver lectures provide important guidelines and suggestions on the present situation and emphasize the remedies that will help to actualize their rights.
