Historical Legacy:

Bangabasi College is a heritage academic institution that was founded in 1887 during the colonial period by Acharya Girish Chandra Bose under the guiding inspiration of academic genius, erudite scholar and social reformer of Bengal, pundit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. The institution played a commendable role during the Freedom Movement. It is a matter of great pride that freedom fighter Jatin Das, was a BA student of this college. The Library of the college is named Jatin Das Memorial Hall after him. The objective of the college was to impart higher education to the socio-economically weaker sections of the society.

A degree course in Bioscience started from 1947-1948 onwards.The college, fared exceedingly well at the graduation level, producing many scholars of national and international repute. The GC Bose Biological Research Unit, a unique research laboratory, was set up in the college where several teachers of Bangabasi College completed their PhD works. The college became co-educational by 1979 and opened its first MSc Course in Zoology in the year 2005.

Realization of Sustainable Development Goals in everyday life.

The institution has not only a glorious past but also an illuminating present. Continuous efforts towards learning and critical thinking are being encouraged through seminars and workshops throughout the year. The institution has firmly emphasized the need to develop itself responsibly and in a sustainable development way. Its distinctiveness lies in its emphasis on the Sustainable Development Goals as advanced by the United Nations in the 2030 Agenda. It firmly realizes the importance of the impact of all three dimensions of environmental, economic, and social on human lives.

Environmental Outputs

  • Keeping the objective of sustainability in mind it has initiated setting up a Green Campus which nurtures the planting of trees, the setting up of the medicinal garden, and cultivating mushrooms.
  • Important dates such as Aranya Saptaha are observed by distributing young saplings amongst students and teachers.
  • The college has taken the initiative to set up a Medicinal Plant garden and Vertical Garden.

One of the most innovative works the college has undertaken is its initiative to install Solar Panels on the rooftop of the 4-storeyed college main building whose capacity of power generation is 10KVA. One Inverter is connected to the grid meter of the electric supply line of CESC. This not only saves electric consumption but also encourages to use renewable energy for future benefit. The data obtained from the solar meter gives the following information and data daily CO2 emission rate, daily plantation saved, and daily coal content i.e. carbon degradation. Moreover, the college has done energy audits, green audits, and environmental audits.

  • The college received a golden opportunity to organize a Two Day International Conference on Renewable Energy and its Impact on making a Clean and Green India in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi to commemorate the event of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • The college organized a One Day International Conference on Non –Conventional Renewable Energy: impact on Environment in collaboration with Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Acharya Jagadish Chandra College, Ananda Mohan College and City College of Commerce and Business Administration.

Economic Outputs: Women's Empowerment and Capacity Building

The college believes in a holistic conception of education which is inextricably related to not only academic scholarship but also enabling oneself as economically self-sufficient. With this objective in mind, the college has initiated Skill Development Courses in different fields such as -

  • Recitation and anchoring,
  • Basic Computer Courses,
  • Tally, etc.
  • These courses especially enhance the students to increase their capabilities and prepare themselves for jobs in the market. The college has signed various MoUs to optimize support in building capacity and gaining confidence. The exchange programs have provided various exposures to students

The college is vigilant about women’s rights and entitlements.The college organizes seminars throughout the year. Special emphasis is given to the Gender Sensitization Programmes. Eminent personalities are invited to deliver their lectures. The West Bengal Commission for Women has been invited to deliver lectures provide important guidelines and suggestions on the present situation and emphasize the remedies that will help to actualize their rights.

Social outputs:

  • Bangabasi College places a lot of importance on the health of its students. The students actively participate in blood donation camps.
  • A gymnasium along with all modern equipment is present within the college campus for both students and faculty.
  • Yoga and Meditation have also been introduced.
  • Self Defence Courses are available for building the health and confidence of our students. Trained assistants are there to provide guidance and support.
  • Providing charity to persons during emergencies in times of flood and cyclone. Our students actively participated during YAAS.

The Uniqueness of the College

  • The College encourages students to take up ICT-based courses and join an Entrepreneurship program.
  • The college has taken a unique initiative in setting up solar panels on the rooftop of the main campus of Bangabasi College. This is a commendable effort on the part of the college to initiate an alternative source of renewable energy.
  • The College organizes summer internships on various courses like programs on Solar Energy. The data obtained from the solar system is profusely utilised in research work.
  • The Bangabasi College upholds the tradition of oral transmission as well as field visits for the practical transmission of information from one generation to the next to ensure its continuity. Under the aegis of this centre, a Museum has been built by the Department of Anthropology, Zoology & Botany in our college premises to preserve the historical information, documentation of our College and its role in the independence movement of India.
  • The unique initiative is taken by the college to impart skills to students in preparing soaps, detergents, Phenyl, Dettol, Shaving Cream, Shampoo, Washing Powder, and Hand Sanitizer. Students will get placement in chemical and pharmaceutical industries, as manufacturing assistants in cosmetic industries research trainees in R&D of various industries.
  • Students are trained for sustainable entrepreneurship through various Add-on Courses.

Instrumentation facility:The College has taken the initiative to provide a centralised instrumentation facility to provide advanced research facilities for the faculty members, research scholars, and UG, PG students.
